ACT Public Holiday Information
There are some public holidays that are unique to the Australian Capital Territory.
Family and Community Day
The last Family and Community Day public holiday was held in 2017. As of 2018 this public holiday has been replaced by Reconciliation Day. The Family and Community Day public holiday was unique to the ACT and was generally held on the first Monday of the September / October school holidays.
Reconciliation Day
2018 marks the first year that the ACT will include Reconciliation Day as a public holiday. Held on May 28, 2018 the ACT is the first Australian jurisdiction to include Reconciliation Day as a public holiday. The May date was chosen to recognise 27th of May, 1967. On this date the Australian population voted to amend the Australian constitution, with immediate effect, to include Aboriginal Australians in determinations of population, and also empowered the Federal Parliament to legislate specifically for the Aboriginal population.
There is a possibility that this date may be considered to replace Australia Day throughout Australia at some point in the future, however no formal changes have been suggested at this point.
Canberra Day
Canberra Day is a public holiday that is unique to the ACT. This public holiday recognises the official naming of Canberra which occured on the 12th of March 1913. The Canberra Day holiday generally falls on the second Monday of March each year.
